This 4-day Uganda gorilla habituation road trip leads you to southwestern Uganda to see the majestic mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and spend up to four hours with a research gorilla family.
Upon arrival in Uganda at Entebbe International Airport, located on a peninsula that juts out into Lake Victoria, Africa’s biggest freshwater lake, you will be welcomed and greeted by your driver/guide. He will be standing at the Arrivals Hall holding a placard with your name so you cannot miss him. You will then be transferred to the hotel or guest house you have chosen and check in for dinner and an overnight stay. Your driver/guide will brief you about your safari either before dinner or first thing after breakfast the next day.
After breakfast, with all your bags securely packed in the car, you commence the drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or its vicinity, where you will stay ahead of your mountain gorilla experience tomorrow. You will stop at the Equator to stretch your legs, take photos at the monument, and refresh before continuing to Bwindi, with another lunch stop in Mbarara at one of the popular tourist eateries. After lunch, you continue to Bwindi in the far southwestern reaches of Uganda, passing rolling hills and commercial tea and pineapple plantations. The landscape changes before your eyes every few hours. Closer to your destination, the gorilla highlands loom ever larger, with spectacular views in many places. On arrival, check in and settle into your chosen lodge. To prepare for tomorrow’s thrilling gorilla habituation experience, it is advisable to have an early dinner and rest.
Today you will spend four hours – rather than the one hour allowed on a standard gorilla trek – in the company of mountain gorillas going through the habituation process with Uganda Wildlife Authority researchers and rangers. The habituation experience is not for the faint-hearted: it means an early breakfast, a packed lunch, and entering the forest before dawn. The reward is that you get much closer to the gorillas than during the standard one-hour tracking experience.
You meet your guide and head to where the gorillas built their nests the night before. As dawn breaks, the gorilla community begins to rise. Gorilla habituation helps the gorillas become accustomed to the presence of humans, a process that can take up to two years, and today you become part of that process. Your camera will fill with memorable pictures, and you will learn to identify individual gorillas through their markings, scars, and other unique features. After four hours with the gorillas, return to the lodge for a hot lunch and a free afternoon to relax. Dinner and an overnight stay follow.
What to bring for gorilla tracking/trekking: light but sturdy hiking shoes, a light rain jacket, a daypack, two litres of water, gardening gloves, long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt or blouse, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, insect repellent, and an energy bar.
Potential add-ons: trek to see golden monkeys or meet the Batwa community during a cultural experience.
After breakfast, check out and commence the drive to Entebbe. You will make two stops, including one for lunch. After lunch, continue with a stop at the Equator. Here, you can purchase crafts and souvenirs from your Uganda safari and take photos at the Equator monument. You should arrive in Entebbe in the late afternoon or early evening, where you are dropped off at the airport to check in for your onward flight home. If your flight is much later, you can use the facilities at one of our partner guest houses to freshen up.
