Day 03: Gorilla Habituation & Relax

Today you will spend four hours – rather than the one hour allowed on a standard gorilla trek – in the company of mountain gorillas going through the habituation process with Uganda Wildlife Authority researchers and rangers. The habituation experience is not for the faint-hearted: it means an early breakfast, a packed lunch, and entering the forest before dawn. The reward is that you get much closer to the gorillas than during the standard one-hour tracking experience.

You meet your guide and head to where the gorillas built their nests the night before. As dawn breaks, the gorilla community begins to rise. Gorilla habituation helps the gorillas become accustomed to the presence of humans, a process that can take up to two years, and today you become part of that process. Your camera will fill with memorable pictures, and you will learn to identify individual gorillas through their markings, scars, and other unique features. After four hours with the gorillas, return to the lodge for a hot lunch and a free afternoon to relax. Dinner and an overnight stay follow.

What to bring for gorilla tracking/trekking: light but sturdy hiking shoes, a light rain jacket, a daypack, two litres of water, gardening gloves, long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt or blouse, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, insect repellent, and an energy bar.

Potential add-ons: trek to see golden monkeys or meet the Batwa community during a cultural experience.
